DUI Legal Process in MA, From Start to Finish (Guilty Plea)


A police officer pulls you over, asks you to complete a field sobriety test, and arrests you for drunk driving. Back at the police station, you get fingerprinted and booked.


This is your first appearance in court. It is generally held within a few days of your arrest. This is where you will be read the charges against you and be advised of your rights. You will have the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty and begin negotiating a plea deal with the District Attorney.


This is a meeting with the District Attorney where we try to negotiate a plea deal. Once a deal is reached, we go in front of the judge for official approval of the plea deal. This will result in entering either a guilty plea for you or a continuance without a finding.


This is hearing you have with the Registry of Motor Vehicles to determine whether you are eligible for a hardship license.
